The Vienna General Hospital (AKH Wien) and the university clinics it operates together with the Medical University of Vienna have reached 20th place in the World’s Best Hospitals 2026 ranking, moving up seven spots compared to last year. The ranking is commissioned by Newsweek and compiled in cooperation with data provider Statista.
Strong improvement in global comparison
After placing 27th the previous year, AKH Wien/MedUni Wien has now advanced into the top 20, positioning itself among the leading hospitals worldwide. The result highlights the close integration of patient care, research, and teaching at the Vienna university medical campus.
Markus Müller, Rector of the Medical University of Vienna, emphasized the significance of the achievement:
“Our university hospital AKH Wien has been recognized as the 20th best hospital in the world in the newly published 2026 Newsweek ranking. This is a remarkable acknowledgment of the daily work of our physicians and staff for the benefit of our patients and the progress of our country, and it confirms the strategy we have pursued over the past decade.”
Herwig Wetzlinger, Director of AKH Wien, added:
“This best-ever placement in the Newsweek ranking makes the extraordinary performance of AKH Wien visible internationally. It gives all employees across all professional groups the appreciation they deserve for their daily work with our patients.”
Integrated patient care, research, and teaching
At the university clinics jointly operated by MedUni Vienna and AKH Wien, patient care, research, and teaching are closely interconnected. The 29 university clinics, with nearly 400 outpatient departments, are run collaboratively by both institutions. Each year, around 65,000 patients receive inpatient treatment, while outpatient and specialized clinics record approximately 1.2 million visits.
Together with MedUni Vienna’s physicians, around 3,000 nurses, more than 1,000 medical, therapeutic, and diagnostic professionals, and many additional staff members from various fields—working within the Vienna Health Association—ensure comprehensive care.
About the ranking
The World’s Best Hospitals ranking is compiled for Newsweek in cooperation with Statista. It draws on multiple data sources, including national medical quality indicators, an international online survey of healthcare professionals, and patient satisfaction surveys. Hospitals may also submit information on their use of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)—standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to assess their own well-being and quality of life.
